Upolu is home to some of the most beautiful swimming spots in the South Pacific. From turquoise ocean lagoons and pristine beaches to refreshing freshwater pools, the island offers a variety of places where visitors can cool off in crystal-clear water while enjoying Samoa’s spectacular natural scenery.

To Sua Ocean Trench

One of the most famous swimming locations in Samoa is the To Sua Ocean Trench. Located on the south coast of Upolu, this giant swimming hole is around 30 metres deep and filled with remarkably clear seawater. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens and connected to the ocean through an underwater lava tube, To Sua is one of the most photographed attractions in the country and offers a truly unique swimming experience.

South Coast Lagoons and Bays

Some of Upolu’s most spectacular swimming spots can only be reached by boat. Along the island’s south coast, sheltered lagoons and bays with crystal-clear water offer excellent opportunities for swimming and snorkelling away from the crowds. Plus, you may even see wild sea turtles while cruising through these lagoons by boat. These lagoons are home to colourful coral gardens, tropical fish and calm turquoise water, making them some of the most inviting places to swim on the island.

Piula Cave Pool

Another must-visit spot is Piula Cave Pool on the island’s north coast. Fed by a natural freshwater spring flowing through an ancient lava tube, the pool remains refreshingly cool even on the hottest days. The water is exceptionally clear, making it easy to see fish swimming below the surface. Visitors can also explore the cave section of the pool and enjoy the shady grounds surrounding it.

National Park Beaches

Visitors joining snorkelling excursions with Manoa Tours can access beautiful beaches within the national park and surrounding protected marine environments. These remote national park beaches feature black sand, clear blue water and a sense of isolation that is difficult to find elsewhere on Upolu. Accessed by boat, these spots provide a unique opportunity to swim in pristine surroundings while enjoying some of Samoa’s most spectacular coastal scenery.

Lalomanu Beach

For those who enjoy swimming in the ocean, Lalomanu Beach is often considered one of the finest beaches in Samoa. Its crystal-clear water, soft white sand and vibrant shades of blue make it an ideal spot for swimming, floating and relaxing while taking in the beauty of Samoa’s coastline.

Togitogiga Waterfall

If you are exploring the south coast, the freshwater pools at Togitogiga Waterfall are also worth a visit. These natural pools are surrounded by rainforest and offer a peaceful alternative to the island’s beaches and lagoons. After rainfall, the waterfalls become even more impressive, creating a beautiful setting.

Choosing Your Perfect Swimming Spot

Whether you prefer freshwater springs, dramatic swimming holes or tropical lagoons, Upolu offers some of the clearest and most inviting waters in the Pacific. Each location showcases a different side of Samoa’s natural beauty, from hidden cave pools and cascading waterfalls to pristine beaches and sheltered lagoons. No matter where you choose to swim, Upolu’s crystal-clear waters are sure to be one of the highlights of any visit to Samoa.
